Coerced Debt Law

The New York State Coerced Debt Law is designed to protect survivors of domestic violence and economic abuse from being held liable for debt forced upon them by abusers. 

The law, which takes effect June 17, 2026 can prohibits creditors from enforcing consumer debt created through fraud, duress, intimidation, force, or the non-consensual use of a victim’s personal information. 

This law defines coerced debt as a debt incurred in the consumer’s name because of duress, threats, intimidation, manipulation, undue influence or force by another person. Covers debt derived from personal, family, or household transactions.

Any coerced debt incurred before June 17, 2026 is not covered under this law.
